Beer hops being grown in Essex for first time in nearly 150 years

Markshall Estate, near Coggeshall, Essex, is growing hops for the first time in over 100 years, marking a revival of a practice that was nearly lost. The charity-run estate has recreated 18th and 19th Century hop-growing techniques based on historical records. Recently harvested by hand, these hops will be used by Mighty Oak Brewing Company to craft two new ales, with unveiling planned for October.

Hops were previously grown at Markshall Estate around 250 years ago, but by 1878, poor weather and competition from Kent’s farmers—who offered higher wages and better yields—led to the disappearance of hop cultivation in Essex. A 1764 map revealed fields labeled as 'hop ground,' inspiring the estate to grow two varieties: Boudica and First Gold. The soil, classified as chalky silt clay, supports the cultivation.

While initial yields are promising, climate change concerns about hot, dry summers could reduce harvests and increase beer prices. Mighty Oak Brewing Company’s Gill Crawford highlights the unique flavor profiles these hops will bring to the ales, with local pubs and bottle versions also available. The estate remains privately owned but open to visitors.
